Downtown Denver Skylight is in Extremely Poor Condition.
Some Background:
The Boston Building opened in 1890 and was hailed as a “strictly modern office building”. In 1978 the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1998 a realty company acquired the Boston Building and renovated it. Renamed the Bank and Boston Lofts, it is an eight-story tower of one- and two-bedroom apartments above a ground-floor level converted to house small retail outlets.
The pyramid skylight above the building’s central atrium is in dire need of replacement. Extreme yellowing and hail damage and some broken panels.
The Lift To The Roof:
The building’s location on 17th street. one block north of the 16th Street pedestrian mall, puts it on a heavily travelled one-way south-easterly street spanning the downtown area.
The crane arrived promptly at 8 AM and completed its work by 11 AM, resulting in a street closure of no more than four hours.
An optional paragraph
The Safety Catch Net:
A week was dedicated just for safety preparations.
Suspending the safety/catch net across the atrium was a challenging, labor intensive project. Nine mesh tarps connected to each other to form one large 15-foot by 45-foot square and stretching it across the space was not easy.
We’ve successfully installed one side of the skylight each week. There was a pre-existing steel framework, we needed to rafters and purlins for additional support. Given the existing steel structure, the new aluminum rafters were delivered long, requiring us to cut them to size on-site. We are finishing the install this week then next week we are taking down the safety and prepping to crane everything down on sat 10/19 so we will be closing the street again.
