Controlling and Adding More Daylight

Imagine a shopping center or mall that has continuous glass skylights over all the common areas. Now imagine a church purchases the mall and wants to expand the amount of glass skylights to create an expansive sanctuary.

This is exactly what was asked of us. We created a solution that met all the requirements, including some special challenges:

  • The new skylight had to look similar in appearance to the obsolete existing skylights.
  • To parallel an existing ridge light, the new skylight tied into an existing ridge light at a perpendicular angle.
  • Balancing the daylighting factors with the appropriate choice of glazing.
  • Replacing and wet sealing over 1800 panes of glass.

What We Did:

  • We worked with the general contractor to design the location of the steel for the tie-in to the existing skylight, creating two valleys for the intersecting ridge.
  • We located a skylight manufacturer that had a similar appearance and framing that would correctly tie into the old skylight. New parts were needed and designed for the existing skylight, specifically in the valley of the two ridges, in order to complete the tie-in.
  • Working with the owners, we helped them choose the correct glazing for the new sanctuary.

Results:

  • The work came in under budget and on time. The new space was well lit, yet the skylights weren’t too bright. For the first time the congregation was able to gather all in one room for their services—creating an overwhelming feeling of unity for the church members.

Benefits of the new skylights:

  • Correct daylighting and solar heat levels required for the space—increased energy savings.
  •  Healthy, natural daylight in the space with soft translucent light and accurate color rendition.
  •  Increased the facility’s property value.
