Embassy Suites Skylight Repairs
We have repaired courtyard skylights for several hotels. Embassy Suites Hotels is one of the companies we’ve worked for at multiple locations. The latest was at the DTC location in Denver, Colorado. The hotel was having their entire roof replaced and wanted to also have their skylight either replaced or repaired.
Their problem was that they let an inexperienced roofer work on the skylight. He had a product that he “painted” onto the exterior extrusions and edges of the acrylic domes. This was supposed to block all water from entering the skylight. It did at first, but then it quickly starting leaking again. This method of repair is common but future repairs are impossible without removing the extrusions and throwing them away. Finding replacement parts is often difficult, either the manufacturer is out of business or the manufacturer is no longer making that particular skylight and the extrusion is no longer available. The other effect this type of repair has is preventing the acrylic to expand and contract, causing cracks.
Our solution for this project was to replace all dome sets and exterior extrusions. We were able to get all parts quickly, which met their fast track schedule. We hung safety nets under the skylight to protect the hallways that gave access to the rooms, surrounding the skylight. However, we did request that the public was kept out from under the nets, just to be sure no one got hurt. We coordinated with the hotel management to insure all scheduled events were not compromised.
This repair was completed quickly and efficiently. Cost was a fraction of the replacement. (See Replacing the Monumental Skylight)
