Utilizing Tubular Skylights to Bring Daylight into East High School, Cheyenne, WY
Cheyenne East High School is a public secondary institution located in Cheyenne, Wyoming and serves Laramie County School District #1. In 2008 and 2009 the school underwent a renovation which included adding tubular skylights. One goal of that renovation was adding natural daylighting to classrooms and hallways.
There are many studies showing that daylighting helps increase the rate at which our children learn. The State of Wyoming was doing its part to update as many schools as possible with natural daylighting by adding tubular skylights to their schools.
Daylighting in Schools
What We Did:
- Installed tube lights
- Installed curbs where needed.
Product Used:
- Velux Commercial SUN TUNNEL tubular skylights
- (75) 21″ tube lights and (17) 14″ tube lights
Results:
- Velux Sun Tunnels are designed to fit right into the suspended ceiling grids. These skylights look like a regular light fixture is on but does not require energy to run the light.
- The school employees reported that the light looks like a regular light fixture but in reality the daylight coming from the lights was a much better quality of light and was much brighter and usable.
Benefits:
- Correct daylighting and solar heat levels required for the space—increased energy savings
- Healthy, natural daylight in the space with soft translucent light and accurate color rendition
- No required maintenance or re-coating costs—individual exterior panels are easily replaced.
- In school environments, increased daylighting has been shown to increase productivity
