Barrel Vault Skylight Is Long Overdue a Rehab.
The Problems:
As skylights age, repairs typically are performed by inexperienced technicians. It seems the most common solution is to apply as much “goop” as possible, and that should fix it!
This major barrel vault has damaged acrylic, due to age and incorrect sealants applied, which actually reduced the acrylic’s life span and made it impossible to perform minor repairs.

Best advice is to never let inexperienced technicians onto your building site.
The Solutions:
Complete replacement was not in the budget and the design of the barrel vault is a good design and the original manufacturer had a decent design. (except for the insert that conceals the screws)
Replacing the glazing is a viable option in this case. The only real regret is not being able to replace the exterior caps, with the inserts. The reason we would have preferred to do this is for two reasons: The old sealants were smeared over the caps and impossible to clean up off the flat surfaces and the middle insert is not a good design to keep water away from the screws that it hides. We have tricks that allow us to use the aluminum inserts when they cannot be replaced.

The goal was better visibility, a “cleaner” look from the inside, and no leaks. Mission accomplished.
