Southglenn Mall loses a skylight to the wind

It is interesting to note that the roof was replaced on this mall in 1988 and the roofers did not re-fasten the barrel vault skylights down, but it took eighteen years before one of the skylights blew off. They at least had used silicone to keep the air out and the silicone acted as glue, holding the skylight in place. Needless to say the maintenance department checked and fastened down all the other skylights. It was also good that no one got hurt from the 12’ x 25’ skylight flying through the air! However, it did tear up the roof and an air conditioning unit. I suspect that if we interviewed tenants that work near this particular skylight they would report that they have been hearing a weird “thumping” noise for some time. This noise would have been the skylight rising in the air and then bleeding it off resulting in the skylight crashing back down onto it’s curb. That probably happened during many windstorms until one big one pulled it completely off!
